40 years of testing
dogs, and for some they have been involved from the beginning. NAVHDA is
celebrating 40 years of testing dogs and with a few circumstances presenting
themselves the Toronto and Grand River Chapter took the opportunity to join
forces and offer a double day test, and celebrate.
The two chapters originally were one covering all of Ontario but with the
memberships expanding in the 70’s former Ontario Chapter split forming the Toronto
Chapter and the Ontario Grand River Chapter. This allowed for Ontario residents
greater opportunity to test and train the versatile dog. Today Ontario has
three chapters with Ottawa offering a program.

The camaraderie at this test as stories of early tests, memorable dogs, and
handlers were shared. In attendance with long term membership was Reinhart
Louke, Mike Pollata , Paul Mocking Pat Gerano , Peter Mast , Daryl McGowan,
The judges for the test were long time members Steve Kane from Ohio, Steve
Harmeyer from Wisconsin, and Ontario judges Claudio Opacak , Dave Arnold, Bill
Gurney and Jack Hague.
Photos of days past refreshed the memories of many in attendance. An attention
getter was a video of 2002 seminar held in Guelph with Ed Bailey and Bodo
Winterhelt. The video not only contained training segments but a history of
some activities that got NAVHDA to a status it is today. A Toronto tradition of barbequed steaks was
the evening meal topped off with an anniversary cake.
A round of happy birthday was sung in honor
of Mike Pollata who was celebrating another great year.
Sunny conditions prevailed all weekend, making the event at Pine Ridge Game
farm successful.
